Review #116 Old Fitzgerald Prime Bourbon: Bourbon

Score: 7.8 / 10

Distillery: Heaven Hill

Type: Kentucky Straight Bourbon

Before you get too far into this review..... if you are new to the bourbon game, this is not the Old Fitzgerald that everyone is chasing. There is a good reason you are staring at it on the shelf in the store with an incredible price tag right below it.....

This bourbon in most states has been repealed off of the market and replaced with Larceny as a flagship brand. That being said, I think that both of these whiskey's (each of which are wheated bourbons) are a bit off from each other when you compare price, so it's not a direct swap out by any means. The BIB version of this has also been discontinued. Looks like it's just rare and allocated Old Fitz from here on out.

Whiskey Review:

Nose: Big notes of green apple meet a sugary sweetness. Barnyard hay intermingles with cinnamon, vanilla brown sugar and a touch of seared wood.

Palate: Plum and dark cherry coat the tongue first before turning into a light and oily vanilla. Orange rind, lemon citrus and a light minty note takeover the second half of the drinking experience, which is finally rounded off by a light cinnamon and pepper.

Finish: Almost sour - makes my cheeks pucker a bit. Turns to lightly tannic and astringent. Leaves light pepper, oak and brown sugar as it fades.

Score: 7.8

Scale:

S+ Sensational - The Pinnacle (9.5+)

A - AXEceptional (astounding) (9-9.5)

B - bravo (step aBove average) (8-8.9)

C - competent (7-7.9)

D - disappointing (6-6.9)

F - flush it down the toilet (fail) (5.9 below)

Availability? Uncommon. As stated above this has not been discontinued, but limited by state. Your state may or may not be still distributing this. Overall, if you see it and want a good bang for you buck, ($11 at the time of this review) I would definitely recommend this.
